There are four important features that come with a car insurance policy that you will want to be aware of. These features are bodily injury coverage, property damage coverage, comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.
Bodily injury and property damage coverage, commonly referred to as liability coverage, are required in most states. Comprehensive and collision coverage can be added to your auto policy if you choose. In some cases comprehensive and collision coverage are required by the company from which you are leasing or financing your vehicle.
Bodily Injury Coverage
If you are found at fault for any car accident, bodily injury coverage is going to help pay any accident-related expenses that the other party endured. This coverage will pay medical fees, lost wages and pain and suffering to the other party. Bodily injury coverage can also help pay your legal fees in the case that the other party decides to sue for further damages.
Property Damage Coverage
If you are at fault for any accident you will be responsible for damages that have been done to another vehicle or property. This coverage can help with those expenses.
Property damage coverage will pay the cost to repair any other vehicle involved, as well as other damages done to a property that can include fence damage, damage to the exterior walls of a home and more. This coverage can also pay legal fees in the case that the other party decides to sue for further damages.
Comprehensive Coverage
Comprehensive coverage is optional. You may want to consider adding this to your policy because it helps pay for repairs that may be needed for your vehicle in the case of a fire, natural disaster, theft, falling objects and more. This coverage comes into effect only after the deductible has been paid.
Collision Coverage
Collision coverage is also optional, but you may consider adding it to your policy because it helps pay for the repair or replacement of your vehicle if your car crashes into another vehicle or rolls over. This coverage comes into effect only after the deductible has been paid and it will only cover the limit that you have selected on your policy.
Some of these features and the basics of their coverage may vary depending on the state in which you live. It is important that you speak with your independent insurance agent to discuss exactly what your options are for each of these features.
